Leanganook Loop
The Hike
I did this hike the first time in 2017 - found it in a hiking book with the 10 best hikes around Melbourne. Ever since, I’ve wanted to go back and finally made it on a beautifully warm and sunny spring day.
The landscape is a stunning assemble of the Victorian Gold Fields landscape - large stone boulders and gum tree forrest with very little undergrowh. The hike loops around Mount Alexander and provides beautiful views over the wider landscape around the park.
High Points
Definitely the narrow paths winding through the boulders - nothing but the birds chirping, kangoroos & ecidnas abound. It is peaceful
Low Points
Turns out, in 2017 I lost the main track and had to bush-bash back to the path. In 2024, I did the exact same mistake. Somehow I’m not good with the signposts - yet other hiking groups seem to nail it… I really have to look into that! On the slightly positive - after coming out of the gate towards the end, I did remember not to use trail directly across but to walk down the road back to the dog boulders.
